The American Judicial Authorities also requested Palazzolo’s extradition, which is when the Mafia association charge became clear. They were in fact referring to another Palazzolo, who was well-known to both the American and Italian Authorities, namely, Vito Girolamo Palazzolo. Palazzolo had to produce certificates for the authorities to prove that he was in no way related or connected to Vito Girolamo. In that first US document1, Vito Roberto Palazzolo is not mentioned.
This lapse in American bureaucracy, however, was the beginning of what has become a 27 year odyssey by Palazzolo to clear his name. Since that time the Italians, at periodic intervals and notwithstanding that there was never any credible evidence, have been charging Palazzolo for exactly the same crimes.
